Canada’s run of good luck came to an end this season as poor snowfall and terrible skiing conditions led many to proclaim it the worst in 10 years. People taking holidays in Canada this year got something of let down.
Canada is world renowned for provided plentiful snowfall and top class conditions for those seeking the white rush. Most resorts are house hold names and places like Whistler usually deliver year on year to the masses of skiers and snowboarders who descend on the Rockies each season. This last season however did not offer the splendors that most people were used to.
A freak -30 degrees high pressure period just before the Christmas period left the slopes wanting and the usual low pressure snow drop never really materialised. There were little bits of snowfall here and there of about 3-5cm but it didn’t hang around and it is difficult to ride on that amount anyway. One skier at the airport said “it’s been borderline terrible”. Bare exposed slopes had been waiting for him when he made the trip out to Castle to previous week.“I maybe got 4 days of riding out of 14, that’s not good”. Another visitor said that she decided to ditch the skiing in favour of doing some sightseeing on one of the local company’s polar bear holidays.
This uncharacteristic lack of snow has led some to point the finger at global warming; suggesting that atmospheric pressures are all over the place lately and weather is becoming increasing unreliable. This argument is brought into question however when you consider that many of the American resorts and most of those in Europe have just had one of the best seasons in their history. Most put it down to poor fortunes and hope for better luck next winter
