This book is an outstanding help with planning for an Alaska cruise. I read and refer to this book often, and regurally.

Great Maps & History But I Need More
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’ve done a lot of research on my ports of call for my upcoming Alaska cruise and while I found the maps in this book to be excellent (including notations of locations of museums on the individual city maps) and the history facinating, what I really was looking for was, for example, what I found out while thumbing through Frommer’s 2009 Alaska cruise book: if you’re going to go to the Visitor’s Center at Mendenhall Glacier, take one of the yellow school-type buses at the end of the dock for $14 round trip unless you want to walk over a mile after the regular bus ($3 round trip) lets you off “near” the v.c. Since my time in Juneau is limited, I think I’ll be taking the $14 bus…thanks Frommer (and I’ll be ordering that book from Amazon today!) May I also suggest that everyone take a look at TripAdvisor.com which has helped me plan some excellent trips the past 3 yrs. Happy Trails.
Alaska by Cruse Ship

A first time cruise and also the first time in Alaska. I found this book very informative.
The descriptions of the places that are covered in the book were very helpful in obtaining a good overview of what to expect. The details given about the operations of the cruise ship were also very helpful.
We found our Princes cruise wonderful and the sites in Alaska breathtaking.
If you are clueless, start with this book

If you have absolutely no idea what you want to see, or where you want to go, then this book could help you. However, if you shop on Amazon.com, you can get the same information this book provides at any of the cruise websites.
The information in this book is basic and cursory, and it provides no real helpful tips. I was looking for hints on what shore excursions to pick, where to eat in port, etc. I didn’t find anything remotely helpful. I haven’t read the other cruise guides, but certainly would NOT recommend this one unless you are starting to plan a trip and know absolutely nothing and don’t like to read online.
pretty disappointing

Wish I had seen this one at the library before I invested the cash for a book that can’t really be passed along.
My biggest problem is that the info in the book is too detailed to be useful unless you’re lucky enough to take the Marine Highway and have days at each port.
A little ponderous for my taste

This book contains a ton of information. However, it’s very “text-booky”. I found it hard to stay engaged while reading it.
Can’t go wrong with this cruise book
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The new sixth edition of Alaska By Cruise Ship is excellent. There was lots of detail on local attractions and shore excursions with maps that actually corresponded with the text. And, there is great information on getting around on your own such as two direct references on getting to Mendenhall Glacier via shuttle buses right at the cruise port. Best tip in the book has to be the great hiking in Skagway. Scenic views, pristine lakes and all free! There are hotel and restaurant tips in the home ports, but in the visiting ports, where the ships only stops for a few hours the accent is on the local attractions as it should be. The sense throughout the book is that Anne Vipond knows what it’s like to be a cruise passenger wanting to get the most out of their limited time in each port. Alaska By Cruise Ship was a great help to us.
Nice history lessons but short on practicality

This book contains beautiful photographs and a pullout map of the voyage routes, but what I was hoping for were detailed maps of the different cities we are going to visit, availability of transportation options when we disembark, and names of restaurants and specific activity recommendations in each port. I was hoping for a real “travel guide,” like the ones I use when I go to Latin America. Other reviews were helpful and some folks warned of the lack of useful information, but the 4-star rating lured me in. Definitely not enough good, current information in here for me.
Informative, and profusely illustrated
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is almost certainly the best “overview” guide to Alaska Cruises you’ll find. There are chapters on both cruising and the sights you’ll see in Alaska, with lots of photos and illustrations plus a large pull-out map. If you’re planning an Alaska Cruise, buying this book will be money well-spent.
Not as good as I had hoped…
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was hoping for more ideas on things to do in port that were not already listed in ship excursions. Had good general info. Interesting facts about Alaskan culture.

Awesome book. If you are planning on an Alaskan Cruise or Cruise/Tour – this is the only book you need. I previously bought 3 other books on Alaska but when I started reading this one – the others didn’t get picked back up. This books has everything you could ever need to plan and enjoy your Alaskan Cruise experience. This book realy should have 10 stars not 5!
Very helpful cruise book
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We found Alaska By Cruise Ship to be a great help on our cruise this summer. We bought two other guides and this one was by far the most helpful with good and useful information on attractions and shore excursions in each port. Hiking suggestions especially were great – trails to Mendenhall Glacier and Deer Mountain Trail were highlights for us. The background on wildlife and glaciers is very interesting and of course enhances the experience when you are actually seeing whales or otters up close. We have done quite a few cruises and I would highly recommend this book.
No real insights

This book does not provide any more information than could be found in brouchures at the ship’s guest relations desk. It doesn’t offer any interesting alternatives to shore excursions and fails to mentions the drawbacks of places listed. Here are two examples. First, Vipond says it is a must to take the White Pass & Yukon Route train in Skagway. Tickets cost over $100.00 per person. Vipond doesn’t mention, however, that you can rent a car in Skagway for about $125.00 and drive almost the same route and have the chance to get out and take pictures. There is an Internet guide describing this route and you can download it for a price.
Next, Vipond mentions Totem Bight State Park in Ketchikan and says there is a bus that takes you there for $2.00. That’s true, but Vipod doesn’t mention that between waiting for the bus to and from the park and time spent at the park itself, you will have spent 2 and 1/2 hours to see about 12 totem poles in 15 minutes. My kids would’ve rather have taken the duck tour in Ketchikan, which of course Vipond failed to mention.
If it wasn’t for the map and the historical and wildlife sections, I’d have given this book 1 star.
Great Book for an Alaskan Cruise!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a wonderful and very useful book if you are planning an Alaskan Cruise! My favorite part is the breakdown for every port which includes a terrific self guided walking tour and a map of each port. Bon Voyage!
Don’t leave home without it
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We checked out a few Alaska guidebooks before planning our September/07 Alaska cruise and found most lacked the cruising information we needed to help us pick a cruise. We found Ms. Vipond’s writing entertaining and thoughtful and her specific information on the types of Alaska cruises that are available (round trip or straight line) very helpful. She also goes into the region’s history, native peoples, wildlife, port attractions with lots of detail on shore excursions which helped us sort out our choices.
On the cruise, the guide’s detailed port maps and the large Alaska pullout map at the back of the book were indispensable. And unlike many other guides, this one has hundreds of color photos which are useful to identify wildlife, spot attractions and gave us an idea of what we would see on various shore excursions. We never left the ship without it.
