Amazon.com Product Description This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.

Garmin’s nüvi 255W improvesupon its 200-series predecessors by adding top-of-the-line features such as FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content to an entry-level line. But Garmin is also introducing some significant improvements with this new series, like a predictive technology that provides faster satellite lock, a redesigned screen with more information, terrain maps, and an exciting new photo navigation feature. The 255W adds complete maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. turn left in 50 feet at Nebraska Way, rather than merely turn left in 50 feet). The 255W also offers a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you.

The nüvi 2×5 models all sport the slim design that Garmin introduced with the 200-series last year, so they all fit comfortably in your pocket or purse, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that makes them convenient for navigation by car or foot. All of the models include useful travel tools like a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more.

Important Product Information: This device features a screen lock feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2×5 and 7×5 Garmin units. If you slide the Power key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the Power key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for Pedestrian mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

New Improved Interface

One of Garmin’s key product philosophies is to make extremely complex technology easy to use for anyone right out of the box, and perhaps nowhere is that better exemplified than in the user interface for Garmin’s portable navigation devices.

Garmin’s interface is a key to their success part of what makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map updates as you navigate.

This year, Garmin has redesigned its interface to include much more useful information.

New HotFix™ – aka: Satellite Ephemeris Data Prediction

hotfix Your GPS device locks onto transmissions from a dedicated network of Satellites in order to determine its position. Until the device gets a lock on three satellites, it can’t effectively navigate, so decreasing the time it takes for your device to get satellite lock is always a goal of GPS manufacturers. With Garmin’s new HotFix technology, your Garmin GPS remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. This gives the device an idea of where it should look for satellites, and dramatically decreases the time it takes for your Garmin to get its position and start navigating. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Using Garmin’s unique Web site — Garmin Connect Photos — users can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

Traffic-Capable for Either FM Traffic or Enhanced MSN Direct Content

MSN Direct Enhanced Traffic and Content

traffic With an optional receiver, you can access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.

Check out a full description of MSN Direct content features, or a coverage map for MSN Direct services.

A 3-month subscription to MSN Direct is included with the receiver. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.

FM Traffic

TMC With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you’ll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you’re forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi’s sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a silent FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network is included with the receiver. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

Widescreen — See More of What’s Around

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Wider screen lets you see more of what’s around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen

Don’t ship defective products
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This product was supposedly refurbished. But it did not work from the minute it came out of the box…It loaded the maps once I even paid for new maps and it did not load them….It worked for about 10 minutes and once I turned it off it refushed to load maps over and over again….I hope you improve your product testing and stop shipping defective products….

Garmin Nuvi 255W GPS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Very nice unit. Works real well and accurately. I use it in my work and the greatest feature is “Where Am I Now”. You push on the car icon on screen and it tells you where you are, gives you an option of locating the nearest Hospital, Police Station, or Gas Station. You can save the location, name it, and it will bring you back to that exact location. Like you go to a large complex that has one address you can pinpoint the exact door, dock or entrance that you used your last trip. Great Feature!!!!

Just Like New
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The 255W works as outlined in the product literature. The voice quality is excellent and the directions are easy to read even from the other side of the vehicle. The other helps are the estimated time of arrival, speed of your vehicle along side the posted speed limit and elevation. Highly recommend this product.

Great GPS and the best price i have seen!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a really easy GPS to operate, with features that others charge a lot more for. It has been a life-saver on more than one occasion. I wish i could get one of these for all of my friends.

I will recommand this product to everyone…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had the opportunity to use this product before. I bought it, because I liked it, obviously. Buying refurbished GPS was a good choice so far. It was cheap and works good for me. Maps are accurate and it is simple to operate this device. The only thing I would improve is to hear the commands a little bit faster. It can be helpful specially when you drive in heavy traffic…

Garmin is the best .

This was refurbished and you would never know it except it was $30.00 cheaper than a sale price.

Great Bargin Automotive GPS Does Exactly what it should
Rating:5 out of 5 stars

The nuvi 255W Referbished, is everything you need in an Automotive GPS. Don’t spend more because you think you’ll need to talk for navigation or that you want to connect to some navigation service or whatever else they’re selling. This is a thin, FAST, device that you can easily carry with you when it isn’t in your car. And folks, that’s part of a portable GPS system: you can take it with you so it doesn’t get stolen. It also has a pedestrian setting for exploring a new city on foot.

The first time you calibrate the GPS system, it may take up to 10 MINUTES. Be patient, walk outside, and don’t move the device. Just let it sit for a few minutes. After that initial setup, you might want to log into the [...] web site and register your device. The serial number is needed and it is on the bottom of your unit on the white label. Mine had the current Garmin map (2010) so no free update was available. Second, charging the device is easy. All you need is a standard USB cable that is used for most electronics. The downside, it doesn’t show a progress bar on the screen as to when a charge is complete.

This device is FAST in recalculating routes. Mere seconds and boom, you’re back on track. No downtime whatsoever. This is really amazing.

You are given the option of navigation as a pedestrian or in a car. That is really great if you’re on foot. You can easily switch between the two.

NOW… my word of advice. SPEND THE MONEY to get the 255W with the “text-to-speech.” When you’re driving in traffic in an unfamiliar place, you don’t want to have to constantly look over to read the street names on the device then find them on the street. The Amazon Refurbished unit I received looks almost new and works great.

All-in-all, I would recommend the 255W Refurbished unit to anyone and everyone. It has exceeded my expectations. I have had two other Garmin units, the 2720 (stollen), and the 555 and this is the best so far.

Should have included the USB cable
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We bought this factory refurbished 255W about one month ago to take on vacation. Overall the GPS worked well, we didn’t update the map to the NT2010 version until after the trip. The booklet that comes with the GPS says “to receive one free map update, [...].” To do this you need the special USB cable #010-10723-01 which is not included with the unit(about $10). This is NOT a regular USB cable, the end that plugs into the GPS is much smaller.

We noticed the unit sometimes could only get us close to the destination and falter sending us in circles.

The map update did take several hours and several steps to complete, we haven’t given the new map a good workout yet.

Nuvi 255W
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought this for my daughter, she has a new job as a sales and marketing associate where she is travelling and driving a lot more, she requested a GPS. I read some reviews and the reviews for this product were good. I have a MIO GPS which is fair and not too user friendly, I wanted to get something that will be easy to use and also provide latest maps. This product was easy to use, my daughter was able to learn most of the features in a short time. She can also get upgrade on the latest maps even thogh this unit is refurbished new. If the kids do not like something about a product they are outspoken and will let you know, so far she has not said anything negative about 255W. I had considered TOm TOm, I called them and they told me very clearly that they will not give free upgrade on maps on a refurbished unit.

Amazon did a fine job, this unit I got is like brand new, the packing, the quality of product is fantastic, my daughter still does not know that the product was refurbished. The price of $129 was a good deal. I recommend this product.

Got the Garmin 255W last month, we are new to this, but found it easy to install. Good price too! We love all the features it has. I did find it can’t get me some of the adresses or Towns I enter, just need to practice with it more. As for Amazon, I am very happy with them. I purchased several items from them and am satisfied with the way they do buisness. Woud recommend this item and Amazon to anyone.

Thank you, keep up the good work.

Good but would be nice to be able to calibrate
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The refurbished nuvi looks like new and performs well so far. There was no problem with registration as some others apparently have had. The only real negative to me is not being able to calibrate your location with much accuracy. I know that for security reasons civilian use of GPS is not permitted to be as accurate as for military usage. But when you program in “home” address and then check “where am I” it would be nice to have the address come up as close to “home”. I can get 2 different values, one being on the same street but more than 50 yards away, and a second on a different street at an address I have not even found yet, but has to be close to 100 yards away. I would have thought there would be some way to actually calibrate the “where am I” to a know address and use that correction information to apply to actually direction finding.

Great investment, great GPS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
On occasion I drive places I need maps and some studying for, this has eliminated all of that work. Its a great option to have to find almost anything. If you travel alot Id never be without one, especially one that works this good.

Plenty of warning before turns, great map views, clear voice, multiple modes such as vehicle and pedestrian. Worth the price and far better than most others that claim to be as good or even close. For this price you cannot beat this GPS.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Excellent GPS, that could only use some more settings. Super easy data entry, and simplicity. Would like some additional features, but…

Have used a Navigon, which I thought was very good, but slow, and a Magellan which I sold because, shock, they have no compatibility with the Macintosh OS. Really, in this day and age? Also, the Magellan 1420 was overly complex.

You cannot go wrong with this unit.

I have had a Nuvi 200 for a year now and my wife wanted one for her car so I got her this 255w. Now I want to trade her. It is Definately faster in aquiring satelites and responding to vehicle movement. It was easy to use due to my past experience with the 200. It does have some neat new features like showing what the current speed limit is. But it is not always right. I like the feature that tells you where the nearest services are. Overall, it is well worth the price and you won’t be disappointed with it.

Accurate and handy

I travel my state frequently for work and this GPS unit really is a handy little helper. It has always been accurate in getting you to the destination, however, it sometimes routes to smaller roads to save a mile rather than to go on an easier paved or 4-lane highway. Just goes to show that we still need to use a little common sense when traveling and not just blindly follow a GPS. That is the same for all GPS units though, not a gripe about this one in general. The only thing I did not like about this unit was that the speaker crackles pretty badly when the volume is above 60%. I’m not sure if this is due to it being a refurbished unit? Other than that, this GPS is great and an awesome value!
