Garmin works after using for a while
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We found this Garmin GPS to be very helpful. Directions were for the most part clear & useful. We especially like the our vehicle speed indication as

our cars are pre computer age (34 years & older). We would have liked a way of choosing a different route, like one that was not interstate or turnpike. There was no way to indicate we were towing a trailer or car which could effect routing. If we turned off the Garmin there seemed to be no way to resume the current settings. This might be in the directions but we couldn’t find it.

Nice GPS unit
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an excellent GPS unit for the price. I have owned a number of units and each one has had it’s own little quirks, so far this unit has not displayed any annoying features. It does not have all the bells and whistles the more expensive units have but do you need them. I have had a couple of more expensive units but never used all the added features they came with. If you need a good basic GPS unit this is it.

I made a good choice

This review will be short since I have only had my unit for two weeks. You can spend hours reading reviews ( and you should )but the bottom line is, it’s a” Garmin ” you can not go wrong with this choice. The problem is…which one? Pick out the features you want and discard the ones you don’t need. Then buy it! If you don’t like it Amazon will take it back and you can start all over again.

I bought the 255W and I love it! I was concerned about all the bad reviews on the text to speech feature and they are correct, it is not perfect but I can live with it and if you turn off that feature the normal voice is nice and clear but of coarse does not give street names. So far the only negative point I have found in the 255W is that in both the text to speech mode and normal speech mode the voice tells me to “Turn here” when I still have one quarter mile to go.But the “turn arrow” will be correct ( “turn in one quarter mile”)I hope this helps a little. One other thing! I bought the “been bag” to use instead of that suction cup thing and that was another good choice.

I am totally direction challenged. Won’t leave home without it. Best one I’ve ever used.

good

We used it for the first time on a short trip last week. The only thing I wasn’t happy about was that you have to put in the full address of where you are going. Sometimes you don’t know it. For instance a certain Motel in a town. I put in the name of it, but it doesn’t recognize it unless you have the full address. Or just a town we wanted to visit, won’t help you unless you have a specific address.

Once we just put in the town we were going to and it came up different address’s and so I put one in from the choices it gave us, not knowing, and it lead us out in the boonies to that particular avenue, and we came to the conclusion that, that was an address to the town, but not the town itself. Took us a bit out of our way. Maybe they are all that way. Haven’t had any experience with any other one.

Also we have a bed and breakfast and every one takes people a mile past our house, so this one does also and it just drops us off in a cornfield. They all do that evidentally as most of our guests drive on by first. Why is that?

It is easy to understand and use.

It is a good one but some times makes mistakes

This is a very good product, it is affordable. The only problem is that it confuse some addresses. I really don’t know why.

Beat my expectations.

I’m very impressed with this Nuvi model. I have no need for the cell phone connection or traffic updates, just wanted a navigator to guide me from point A to point B as I get lost easily in my own town and to set up long trips. I really like the versatility of picking destination points either by inputing an explicit address, uploading from Google Maps, or just touching a point on the display. When I do get lost, I love being able to touch Go Home and am guided out of my predicament. Performance appears very good to me, recalculating a change in a route in a second or two. Since my near vision isn’t very good I like the combination of the voice prompts and the big white arrow indicating an approaching turn, especially at night. The only nitpick disappointment was when I downloaded the free 2010 map update it dosn’t show road extensions completed a few years ago. But when I turned onto those extensions, it still recalculated the new route properly. Others have complained that you only get one waypoint with this model, but I can add as many as I want. Getting the prompted software update might have corrected that. Tip: I discovered that the floor of the Prius’s somewhat useless top glovebox tightly holds the suction cup mount, provides a sun shade, and is convenient for the power cable. No need for additional dash mount!

Garmin 255W works as advertised
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased the Garmin 255W based on reviews at Amazon.com and several other sites like CNET. I travelled from Plymouth, MA to Fredericton, NB, Canada. The unit worked great and for the price it couldn’t be better. The maps for New Brunswick were not quite as good as the US, but then I was back home and New Brunswick is not like Maine. Addressing is a little more problematic there, but I don’t fault the Garmin for that, but it could be improved. Re-calculation was quick and Points of Interest was good and often very helpful. The newer pricery models have a slightly better touch screen and work quicker when zooming in or out or panning, but if you want to spend less than $200 for a GPS navigator that gets you where you want to go then this one works fine. I’ve only had it for a month and only use it when I need it so I cannot comment on its long term quality. The suction mount worked fine in the pick-up and could be mounted on the console keeping the dash area GPS free which was impressive.

I still need to figure out some of the features – anyone have a fifth grader to lend me?
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I need to go on line to figure out the features – I move from state to state and it is difficult to access the directions when I need them. I wish it told me to move into the right lane before I saw the exit sign. It is my first GPS and I am intrigued by it.

We went to the most remote place in the mountains that had an address and it still got us close (.1 mile) of the location.

I moved to a new state last week and this garmin has been a real help in getting around, finding shopping ,etc. Can’t believe I waited so long to buy one. The price on Amazon was better than anywhere else. I love this machine and I paid a good price.

It’ll get you within 5 houses of your destination.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’m a pizza deliveryman so I rely on a good GPS to get me as close as possible to my destination. On a couple of occasions it has been really off, sending me off course nearly half a mile in the opposite direction. On several deliveries it got me within 5 – 8 houses away from where I needed to be. 75 – 85% of the time it will get you within 10ft of your destination. So I just use it to get to the right street. After that I just look for the house number or call the customer for more info to help find their place faster. The spoken turn-by-turn directions are clear and very timely. As soon as it says turn I know to turn. 99% of the time it will gives the correct side of the street. For the price it is very affordable. I used the free shipping method through amazon and it took an eternity. I saw it available at Walmart for nearly the same price while I waited for over 2 weeks to receive it. I lost out on a lot of money because I didn’t have the GPS when I needed it. If you see it in the store for the same price as Amazon, just go pick it up. It’s worth the money and there isn’t a subscription fee to use the service like some other GPS devices out there. Also I recomend using the security feature to set a pin, so if somebody steals your GPS they won’t be able to use it and registering it with Garmin, so that you might be able to retrieve it if stolen. I use the suction cup mount because I like to keep the screen in my frame of vision without turning my head, but I make sure to take it with me when I park my car. I hope this review is helpful to you.

So easy

I’m not very savy when it comes to electronic technology,

but even I can use this right out of the box. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to set up and operate. If I can do it, anybody can.

Worth the money

I bought this Garmin GPS 2 months ago and I’m pretty happy with it, it’s worth the money, really easy to use and very accurate, the most i like about it is that it pronounces the name of the street on where you should turn e.g “after 300 feet turn right at East Colfax Avenue” not just “turn right after 300 feet”

Excellent intuitive use product
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This GPS does everything you ask it to do, simply and without fuss. No manual is required, even for the most technologically challenged (my brother). It is not perfect and routes chosen work well, even if I would not choose those routes myself. The most important thing is that you always get where you want to go. Finds itself (locks on to satellites) and calculates routes quickly. Brightness and volume are good. An amazing product for the price.

Fall Foliage Trip
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I used it for the first time on a trip last week to the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. I chose small towns as destinations and it always led me there without any problems, thus allowing me to enjoy the scenery of the fall foliage without worrying about using a map for directions or getting lost. The Garmin GPS served its purpose without fail.

Love is in the air

This is my first time using a GPS device. If my Garmin Nuvi 255W could provide for me sexually and bake me cookies, I’d marry the thing. When I first got it, I took it with me and drove god knows where. An area I was not familiar with. I just kept driving and driving confident that the Garmin Nuvi would direct me anywhere I wanted to go. And that it did. If I ever get hungry, I just punch in what I want and boom. It will direct me to the closest restaurant and show me the way. Just amazing. It really turns the world into a digital playground for yourself. It’s like a cheat or a reality hack. My major concern was how good it would be at speaking to me, and it’s actually fantastic. It tells you to keep right, when you need to, tells you the exit number you need to take on highways and more. If you don’t have one of these you are missing out on life. It’s fun just driving around randomly AND CONFIDENTLY discovering new things. 5 big fat stars, Garmin, you won my heart.

Do Not Trust Garmin. Wrong Info
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have had dozens of calls from users of this product wanting to know where I am located. They are at the address that Garmin is showing, but I’m not there. I have to tell them that I am 100 miles away. Garmin has my business name, street address and phone number correct, BUT they have me listed in a city 100 miles away.

I called Garmin about the problem and all the calls I’m getting. They checked and found that even the upcoming update is incorrect also. Then he said: “Well, maybe they’ll get it fixed sometime next year. But, I really don’t know.”

This makes me wonder just how many other errors there are. I’m sure that I’m not the only one they have listed with the wrong address or city information. Would you trust a company that takes such a casual attitude toward a major problem?
