Inverness, a city in the Highlands of Scotland is situated in some of the most beautiful countryside in the U.K.. In and around Inverness are a number of important historic sites, frequently these sites saw a great deal of suffering and violence. Thankfully the city of Inverness has a incredible number of visitor attractions (and the number is continually increasing). In the paragraphs below I discuss 3 places to visit in Inverness Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, Beauly Priory and Inverness Castle:
Beauly Priory
It was in the 13th century that Valliscaulian Monks founded a community at Beauly Priory. Sadly no-one can say the factual foundation date but it is widely accepted that is was sometime around 1230. During that time Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat, was the landowner and patron of Beauly. Bisset, together with the French monks, are those who named Beauly, coming from the French words for beautiful place. Sadly, the priory at Beauly was abandoned following the Scottish Reformation and the stone was used in the building of other structures in the area. In 1913 the ruins of Beauly Priory were passed over into state hands and they are currently in the care of Historic Scotland.
Inverness Castle
Throughout the centuries there have been many structures on the site of Inverness Castle, some dating as far back as 1057. King Robert I, of Scotland, almost destroyed the very first Inverness Castle. The current castle was designed and constructed by William Burn in 1836. The beautiful structure, of red sandstone, is perched on a cliff gazing down over the the cathedral on the opposite side and the River Ness. King James I(of Scotland) conducted parliament at Inverness Castle in 1427, and called all the Northern Chieftains to be in attendance. Alarmingly 3 of these chieftains were eventually killed for supporting an independent monarchy.
Inverness Museum & Art Gallery
Found in Inverness town center is the newly refurbished Inverness Museum and Art Gallery which is really worth visiting especially if the weather is wet and windy. At the museum you can explore Scottish History and discover how the Highlands are linked with the rest of the world. It is also possible to learn about the folk of the Highlands, their traditions and environment. There are a lot of different exhibitions featuring, costumes, textiles, fine arts, crafts, archaeology and wildlife.
